Welcome to BrewDogs!

Welcome and thanks for visiting! We are the Brew dogs of SMU. Our love of craft beers, good times, and great food has inspired us to blog about  some local breweries around the DFW area.  This blog is dedicated to comparing the atmosphere and beer selection of some of our favorite local breweries. We have decided to visit Four Corners Brewery, Braindead Brewing, Texas Ale Project, Community Beer Co., and Deep Ellum Brewing Company.  Many of you might ask, "What is craft beer?" so we provided a breakdown of the basics of craft beer and our 3 favorite brews. We love your feedback! What is a Craft Beer? The first question you may ask is what actually constituents a Craft beer? Well there are many factors that go into a Craft brewery, but they have 3 common attributes: Small Annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales). Beer production is attributed to the rules of alternating proprietorships.

Deep Ellum Brewing Company

Deep Ellum Brewing Company We decided to spend a Friday afternoon taking on one of the craft brewing hot-spots in Dallas: Deep Ellum Brewing Company. Nestled in the heart of Dallas' eclectic Deep Ellum neighborhood, this brewery does not disappoint. Deep Ellum Brewing Company has a great venue for hanging out with friends, and well-made beers to match. Featuring both inside and outside seating, Deep Ellum has plenty of space for everyone. This is a good thing, since it happens to be one of the most popular breweries in town. The inside seating is dark but inviting, with plenty of tables to sit at. However, we chose to sit outside, and were very happy with the choice. The spacious patio features a small stage, many tables, and numerous fans to keep patrons cool on hot Dallas days. Once we got settled, we walked to the bar and order flights of beer. Deep Ellum offers a four-beer flight for only $10, and this is definitely the go-to choice. With quite a few very tasty beers

Community Beer Co.

When we walked into Community Beer Co. we could tell immediately that this place had it all!! The first thing you will notice is its impressive size. The brewery is an open warehouse that offers a casual environment. It offers an impressive variety of craft beers with a rotating seasonal selection. It also offers live music, two massive projectors, jumbo jenga and more corn hole than the state of Nebraska could handle. It feels like one big warehouse party. It's a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon with a large group of friends. Community does not offer food in house, but it does rotate food trucks in the back of the venue. This was an added bonus as it gave us something to soak up all the beer. This weeks food truck offered excellent pulled pork tacos! This facility is dog and kid friendly, so it's a great place for families, and apparently, the coolest of dogs hang out at Community. The guy pictured here received a lot of attention that day

Texas Ale Project

Image
Texas Ale Project   Texas Ale Project is the first brewery to be built from the ground up in the city of Dallas since the late 1800's. The inside of the brewery is massive. When you enter the building, there is a small room to the right. This "T.A.P. Room" consists of a small bar where they serve their four core beers as well as seasonal rotating drafts. The outdoor "beer garden" is spacious and great for a summer hang out with friends as it offers corn hole and jumbo jenga. This brewery had an excellent lineup of beers! We listed a few of our favorites with descriptions below. Somethin Shady-Porter - An unusually drinkable porter with subtle notes of coffee and chocolate. This ale is a sublime blend of premium roasted malts, delectable enough to drink year round. Payne Pils-Pilsner - This Zwickelbier is brewed in a traditional manner with Czech Saaz hops and Pilsen malt. Smooth and exceptionally drinkable Fire Ant Funeral-Amber -

Braindead Brewing

Braindead Brewing Our next stop on the brew train was Braindead Brewing, the second of two breweries on our list located in the Deep Ellum area. The patio is lined with wooden benches, and the inside is spacious and filled with communal tables so locals of all walks of life can engage in conversation. Braindead Brewing is a relaxed brewpub that offers their own selection of house made brews as well as a variety of local craft beers. The outdoor seating is pictured to the left. We got there early and found seating but it filled up fast! This is the only brewery on our list that offers a full service food menu. It's no ordinary menu though. Chef David makes everything from scratch and offers some of the best creations in Dallas. Share the veggie queso or "not yo fries" with friends. And if you're hungry enough, order the coma burger to soak up your beers. A few of our favorite beers with short descriptions are listed below. Main Street Kolsch-Kolsch Style Al

Four Corners Brewery

Four Corners Brewery Our tour de' breweries started at Four Corners Brewing Co. This brewery was founded by 3 friends who enjoyed beer so much that they started brewing in their garage. A few of their home brewed recipes have served as the basis for some of their most popular beers to this day. The brewery is right over the Margaret Hunt Hill bridge in the Trinity Groves area. The place offers a laid back atmosphere with plenty of seating inside or on the patio. You can choose from 4 beer flights for $7 or 6 beer flights at $10. How can you not go for a flight at those prices?! We spoke to the local brew master, Tony, and he noted that they are known for their local buzz (left), and that it is a must try. His recommendation was well received. This beer is brewed with locally sourced honey and rye malt. The “buzz” is refreshingly crisp with a sweet floral aroma. Rye malt adds a clean, spicy finish. A few other favorites are listed below. Super Bee-De Saison - A freestyle
